Definitely horror with a side of magical realism, but not the kind that will keep you up at night. While the inclusion felt forced (every sexual orientation, gender presentation, and race was seemingly included in a very small cast… AS WELL AS touching on the idea of class difference… While still somehow having the story be fundamentally about white women), there was obviously a lot of representation, which is always a good thing. The story itself was gripping and the twist was pretty unexpected.
This book was pure fluff and I loved every single page of it. Magical realism that dips all the way into fantasy romance. There were a lot of sexual orientations and genders in this one, but in the case of this book they just worked. The people felt like fully formed characters who happened to be queer and not queer stereotypes used for the sake of using them. TikTok just informed me that this is a “closed door romance” and that means we know the spice happens, but we don’t see any of it. I loved it. This might be my fall reread every year for the foreseeable future.
